Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational sciencES (ARIES) is an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. It is one of the leading research institutes, specializing in Astronomy & Astrophysics and Atmospheric Sciences. ARIES’s main campus is located at Manora Peak, Nainital, Uttarakhand with another observatory campus located at Devasthal, Nainital. The Devasthal Observatory hosts the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT), which is India’s largest and a national facility.

ARIES Science Popularization and Outreach Programme (ASPOP) is aimed toward disseminating scientific knowledge among students and society at large, particularly in remote hilly regions, as part of the institute’s scientific social responsibility. ARIES Science Centre has dedicated telescopes, a mini planetarium, science exhibits/movies, etc. Two positions are being advertised by ARIES to support ASPOP activities.

Young, bright and motivated candidates eligible for the below positions are invited for Walk-in Interview on 13th March, 2023 at ARIES, Manora Peak Campus, Nainital-263001, Uttarakhand. The reporting time will be 09:00 am.

The staff will help in conducting and coordinating the ASPOP activities at as well as outside ARIES. They will work under the supervision of the undersigned. The emolument may be as per the institute norms. The following qualifications and experiences may be considered for the above positions:

1. PROJECT ASSOCIATE

Emoluments: Rs. 25,000/- per month + HRA as applicable

Maximum Age limit: 35 years

Place of posting: Manora Peak Campus/Devasthal Campus of ARIES

Qualification:

Essential:

  • M.Sc. in Physics/Maths or B.E/B.Tech, with minimum 50% marks or equivalent grade (aggregate) from a UGC recognized University or Institution. Candidates with B.Sc. in Physics or Maths may also be considered if they have substantial experience in astronomy or science outreach as a full time job for at least a year.
  • Experience in science outreach for at least 1 year in a formal or informal capacity.
  • Knowledge of basic astronomy concepts.
  • Skilled in explaining these in non-technical terms and simple examples.
  • Good computer skills (Google services, MS-Office, Social Media handles).
  • Good in spoken and written English and spoken and written Hindi.

Desirable:

  • Experience as an amateur astronomer for at least 1 year.
  • Attended any formal or informal astronomy courses or classes.
  • Familiarity with design/editing softwares (for image, video, animations etc.)

Job Description:

The candidate will be required to support ARIES’s outreach activities by developing and designing outreach content such as posters, brochures, leaflets, social media posts etc. in a time bound manner, conduct skywatching sessions using telescopes, coordinate visits of students/general visitors and give them tour of the science centre and the facilities at ARIES and give/arrange outreach talks in nearby schools/colleges. The candidate will be primarily stationed in Manora Peak campus or Devasthal campus and will be required to travel for outreach events/activities from time to time. The candidate will work with the members of the ASPOP team, and report to the Chair/Co-Chair of the KRC and Public Outreach Committee.

2. PROJECT ASSISTANT

Emoluments: Rs. 20,000/- per month + HRA as applicable

Maximum Age limit: 30 years

Place of posting: Manora Peak Campus/Devasthal Campus of ARIES

Essential:

  • B.Sc. in Physics/Maths with minimum 50% marks or equivalent grade (aggregate) from a UGC recognized University or Institution.
  • Knowledge of basic astronomy concepts.
  • Good computer skills (Google services, MS-Office).
  • Good in spoken and written English and spoken and written Hindi.

Desirable:

  • Experience in astronomy or science outreach in a formal or informal capacity.
  • Experience with translations between Hindi and English.

Job Description:

The candidate will be required to support ARIES’s outreach activities by helping design and translate outreach content such as posters, brochures, leaflets, social media posts etc., help conduct skywatching sessions using telescopes, coordinate visits of students/general visitors and give them tour of the science centre and the facilities at ARIES. The candidate will be primarily stationed in Manora Peak campus or Devasthal campus and will be required to travel for outreach events/activities from time to time. TERMS & CONDITIONS

  • Only Indian nationals can apply for the positions.
  • The positions are purely temporary on contract basis and do not entitle any privileges or benefits of regular employment to the selected candidates. No claim whatsoever for regular employment at ARIES shall be entertained.
  • The date of determining the age limit threshold, qualifications and experience shall be the date of the Walk-in Interviews.
  • The remuneration indicated is consolidated and is inclusive of all allowances.
  • Age relaxation is permissible to SC, ST and OBC candidates and to differently abled candidates as notified by Govt. of India norms.
  • No correspondence shall be entertained with the candidates not selected for the positions.
  • The tenure of appointments will be for a period of one year initially and may be extended annually subject to satisfactory performance of the candidates in annual assessments and requirements of the institutes.
  • The prescribed qualifications are minimum requirements and mere possession of the same does not entitle candidates to be appointed.
