In present era of internet technology, many educational resources are free and a lot of freeware software’s are available that can break the outlook of using paid software’s like Windows OS, Microsoft Office Suite, Visual Basic, Tally, MATLAB, etc. To promote the use of Free Open Source Software (FOSS), a lot of efforts are being taken up by the Government of India, along with Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), premiere Institutions like IITs and various State Governments. One such Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) FOSS courses is popularized in the 2010s by Prof. Kannan M. Moudgalya, a Professor in IIT Bombay, India, through a project called Spoken Tutorial. This project is an initiative of the ‘Talk to a Teacher’ activity of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), launched by IIT Bombay with the support of MHRD, Government of India.
ARIES is now the official partner of the Spoken Tutorials, IIT Bombay (spoken-tutorial.org) and has been provided the free access to their MOOC FOSS courses, so that our students and staffs can enhance their IT knowledge/Software skills by enrolling in a range of popular and lucrative Open-source software courses under this Program. All the courses in this program are designed for self-learning, free-of-cost in distance education mode at convenient time and place. Offline learning is also possible, without needing Internet connection.
Some key features of Spoken Tutorial project are given below:
- Spoken Tutorial is an easy self-learning audio-video tutorials, covering many useful IT applications/ software like basic IT literacy, C, C++, Java, Python, Perl, LaTEX, Drupal, PHP/MySQL, Linux, Scilab, LibreOffice, Blender, and many more.
- The courses are available in Hindi, English and other 20 different languages.
- In India, so far the Spoken Tutorial project has trained over 4 million learners on various open source software across India, and have been incorporated as a part of curriculum at various premier institutions and universities like IITs, IIMs, etc.
