I will discuss observations conducted with SALT and other SAAO telescopes of transients and other targets of opportunity, with an emphasis on accreting binaries, namely cataclysmic variables and X-ray binaries. The recently established MASTER-SAAO optical transient detection facility will be described, plus the recent results following from this, particularly relating to new CV discoveries. Future plans for followup observations of transients, detected by various facilities, with SALT and other facilities will also be presented.
