Abstract
The motions of gas, plasma, and energy in the Universe is commonly referred to as astrophysical flows. These flows are often found in extreme physical environments, such as matter around compact objects, where they appear in two forms: inflows (e.g., accretion) and outflows (e.g., jets). This thesis investigates the physics of accretion and jets in black hole (BH) systems using numerical simulations. The study employs an Eulerian finite-volume MHD simulation code, which is equipped with the relativistically correct Chattopadhyay & Ryu equation of state (CR EoS; 2009), which accurately captures the thermodynamic properties of plasma having multispecies composition.
In the first part, the possibility of accretion disc formation around an isolated BH is explored, when matter is supplied as a continuous, parallel inflowing stream. We investigate whether plasma composition plays a role in disk formation and stability by considering stream as charge-neutral plasmas composed of electrons, positrons, and protons in different proportions. Moreover, the effects of the magnetic field on the circularization process is also investigated. In the second part, the propagation of low-power, magnetized extragalactic jets on kiloparsec scales is studied using large-scale 3D simulations, with a particular focus on the Fanaroff-Riley (FR) dichotomy. We systematically investigate how various plasma properties, including the composition, may influence the jet stability and the transition of collimated, edge-brightened FR II jets into diffused, core-brightened FR I jets.
