Inauguration of the 4m International Liquid Mirror Telescope at Devasthal

The 4m International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT) at ARIES's Devasthal Observatory campus achieved the first light in the second week of May, 2022. This was followed by a testing and commissioning period of a few months. The ILMT is now going to be inaugurated on 21st March, 2023 in the gracious presence of Indian and Belgian dignitaries.

The ILMT employs a 4-metre-diameter rotating mirror made up of a thin film of liquid mercury, to collect and focus light. The telescope is designed to survey the strip of sky passing overhead each night, allowing it to identify transient or variable objects such as supernovae, gravitational lenses, space debris, asteroids, etc.

A digital leaflet on ILMT is available here.

For press & media: A detailed press note will be available here on the day of the inauguration.
