Application for Integrated M.Tech./Ph.D. (Tech.) at ARIES [2025]

Integrated M.Tech-Ph.D (Tech.) Programme

We have initiated the Integrated M.Tech. - Ph.D. (Tech.) programme in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta (CU) at ARIES. The degree will be awarded by the University of Calcutta. The duration of M.Tech. coursework will be of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. After successful completion of the M.Tech. course, a student can opt for registration in Ph.D. (Tech.) programme, subjected to a selection procedure and minimum cut-off grade.

Programme Description

The Integrated M.Tech. - Ph.D. (Tech.) programme will admit bright, highly motivated students with a three years B.Tech. degree (post B.Sc. Hons) in Optics and Optoelectronics / Radio Physics and Electronics from CU or B.Tech. / B.E. degree in Electrical / Instrumentation / Electronics and Communication / Computer Science / Mechanical Engineering from an institution recognized by AICTE. A candidate with an M.Sc. degree in Physics / Electronic Science / Applied Mathematics / Applied Physics from a UGC-recognized institution is also eligible to apply.
 
Selected students will be fully supported with a studentship of Rs. 20,000/- pm for the first two years. Students will be provided hostel accommodation and medical facilities; tuition fees will be the student’s responsibility.
 
The first two semester classes will be held at the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta. The third and fourth semesters comprise an internship at ARIES field stations and projects at ARIES laboratories, respectively. Upon successful completion of two years in the programme the candidates will be awarded a M.Tech. in Astronomical instrumentation. In the third year of the programme, students who qualify for continuation in the programme leading to the Ph.D. (Tech.) degree will begin research work at ARIES. They will be paid a fellowship of Rs. 37,000/-pm beginning the third year and Rs. 42,000/-pm beginning the fifth year of the programme. The normal duration of the programme will be 6 years, including a minimum of 2 years for the Masters' Degree. The candidates would satisfy all the administrative requirements of the University and submit their Ph.D. thesis to the University of Calcutta.
 

Application process for admission in the integrated M.Tech. - Ph.D. programme (2025)

Selection to this programme will be through an in-person interview at ARIES, Nainital.

Minimum qualification:

  • M.Sc./BE/B.Tech. with a minimum 55% marks for General/OBC and 50% for SC/ST. Post-graduation degree should be from a UGC recognized college/University.
  • The candidate should have passed M.Sc/BE/B.Tech. on or after 2023. Students who are appearing in M.Sc./BE/B.Tech. final year exam can appear before the interview, but, if selected have to furnish proof of M.Sc./BE/B.Tech qualification at the time of joining.
  • Age limit: 28 years as of June 30th, 2025 (date of birth on or after June 30th, 1997). The upper age limit for reserved categories may be relaxed per the UGC rules.
  • Applicants should have CSIR/UGC-NET (JRF/LS) qualified in Physics / Electronic Science / Applied Mathematics / Applied Physics (2023/24) - OR - GATE valid till 2025 qualified.
  • All the applications will be further screened by taking into account marks/ranks in GATE/CSIR, UGC-NET, and BE/B-Tech./M.Sc. and other guidelines decided by ARIES. Fulfilling minimum qualifications does not guarantee a call for an interview.
