Project Associate Position for the SSA Project Funded by ISTRAC-ISRO, Bengaluru
With reference to the Implementation Agreement between ISRO and ARIES for Refurbishment and Utilization of BNST at Manora Peak, Nainital, January 2024 a team of three project engineers for a duration of 1 years and extendable, however, coterminous with project are required. The qualification and experience with remunerations, upper age limit and other guidelines shall be as per DST Norms: (OM No. SR/S9/Z-05/2019 dated 10 July 2020) defined for Project Associate-I and Project Associate-II as applicable. The team would be working on engineering aspects related to development, integration and testing of ground based astronomical telescopes for Space situational awareness (SSA). Their work would be managed by ARIES (as defined in MoU) and jointly reviewed by ARIES and ISRO members.

Job Profile:
1. One engineer with fulltime Bachelor or Master of Engineering/Technology degree in Electronics or Electrical engineering including all branches of Electronics and Electrical Engineering.
Additional Requirements:
Role: Servo control system design, simulation on Matlab and validation on hardware.
Prior experience in Servo control system design, simulation on Matlab, Embedded systems and FPGA. Modelling and implementation on HIL and RCP platform. Relevant hands-on industrial exposure or internship is desired.
Description of the job and Responsibilities:
Design, development and validation of telescope control system, GUI development, Participation in night observations with the telescope to monitor and track space objects, including satellites and orbital debris. Interface with the industries during the project phase and would be required to also visit ISRO, SSOM, ISTRAC.Characterising telescope and CCD/CMOS detector performance. Development and testing auxiliary systems like dome automation, filter automation, weather station and sky monitor.
2. One engineer with fulltime Bachelor or Master of Engineering/Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Additional Requirements:
Role: CAD and CAM and translating CAD drawing into shopfloor manufacturing drawings and FEM analysis.
Prior experience in CAD and CAM and translating CAD drawing into shopfloor manufacturing drawings, FEM analysis, Machining, fabrication, verification and assembly processes, Mechatronics design and development.
Description of the job and Responsibilities:
Design, fabrication, verification and assembly of components for telescope, sensors, dome etc. Development of mount and mechatronics parts. Participation in night observations with the telescope to monitor and track space objects, including satellites and orbital debris. Interface with the industries during the project phase and would be required to also visit ISRO, SSOM, ISTRAC. Development and characterization of of flexure model and thermal model for telescope.
3. One engineer with fulltime Master’s Degree in Physics/Astronomy/Astrophysics or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology Aerospace/Engineering Physics/ Computer Science / Information Technology
Additional Requirements:
Role: data Processing, software development and automation
Prior experience in astronomy/astrophysics, space debris, efficient in python programming language, desirable knowledge of astronomical image analysis. Relevant hands-on industrial exposure or internship is desired.
Description of the job and Responsibilities:
Participation in night observations with the telescope to monitor and track space objects, including satellites and orbital debris.
Assessing the quality of the observed data and performing steps to improve the quality.
Performing data reduction and photometric analysis.
Developing ML/AI based algorithms for automated detection of streaks.
Characterising the detected streaks and cataloging the orbital parameters in a database.
Terms and Conditions:
- Tenure: Initially for One (01) year.
- Monthly Emolument: Based on the relevant work experience and the interview performance, the candidate may be offered Project Associate-I, Project Associate-II or Senior Project Associate positions. The details of these posts are:

Service conditions shall be governed as per the Institute’s norm & DST guidelines, as amended from time to time.
3. Termination: Director ARIES reserves the right to terminate the engagement/contract at any stage in case of impropriety, misconduct, breach of conditions, irregular attendance, or poor performance quality.
4. Posting: The selected candidate will be posted at ARIES, Nainital campus and will have to travel to Devasthal Observatory to perform observations with the telescope.
