Abstract

Globular clusters are one of the oldest relics of the Universe. They are home to some of the most exotic known stars, the understanding of which is still in its infancy. In the first part of the presentation, we are going to talk about the study of hot HB stars of one of the oldest MW GC, NGC 2808. In the second part of the presentation, we will discuss the role of GCs in calibrating and testifying our stellar libraries and thereby our understanding of stellar physics. In this part, we demonstrate the use of empirical libraries to estimate the atmospheric parameters of stars in the GC NGC 6397 to assess the possibility of occurrence of atomic diffusion in GC stars. Using these results we highlight the gaps between the theoretical and empirical libraries and the need for consistent libraries. In the last part of the presentation, we will direct the discussion to the extragalactic GCs in the core of the Virgo galaxy cluster. We will discuss the subtle relationship between the color-color distribution of the GCs and their host environments.

About Speaker

Dr. Jain completed her Ph.D. in November 2021 from the University of Strasbourg. Prior to that, she obtained her master's degree from IIST, Trivandrum. She works on Globular cluster science across the wavelength range in UV, optical, and IR in the context of multiple stellar populations in GCs and the role of GCs in understanding galaxy formation and evolution. This seminar is a part of the activities commemorating "75 years of India's Independence: Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" at ARIES.
