1st ARIES School for Training in Atmospheric Research (ASTAR), 25 November - 1 December 2026 is aimed to enhance and strengthen the scientific fundamentals of research in Atmospheric Science amongst students pursuing post-graduation. The programme will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of atmospheric processes, observational and modelling techniques, and the role of the atmosphere in air quality, weather and climate.
It will play a key role in developing a skilled workforce capable of addressing pressing environmental challenges, particularly air-quality issues, changing atmospheric composition, and the processes governing the lower troposphere. This shall provide students with an understanding of how trace gases, aerosols, atmospheric dynamics, transport, and boundary-layer processes influence air quality and the atmosphere–environment system, while also encouraging young researchers to pursue advanced studies and careers in Atmospheric Sciences.
The target audience for the school is primarily students who are in M. Sc. (Physics/ Atmospheric Sciences/ Earth and Environmental Sciences) First/ Second year, Integrated MS (Physics/ Atmospheric Sciences/ Earth and Environmental Sciences) Fourth/ Fifth year and B.Tech (B.E. in Engineering Physics/ Civil Engineering (from an AICTE-recognized institution)) Fourth year with an interest and motivation to work in atmospheric science, with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.
The total number of participants is limited to 30 - 25 (outstation) +5 (local)
The selected participants are eligible to get travel support. The AC 3-tier train fare will be reimbursed for the round-trip journey using the shortest route from the applicant's address after producing an original tickets.
Free lodging and boarding will be provided from one night before school starts to one day after school ends.
