Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational SciencES (ARIES) is an autonomous institute of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The institute came into existence at Varanasi in 1954 as U.P. State Observatory and was shifted to Nainital in 1956. In 2004, the institute was reincarnated as ARIES.

Situated adjacent to the picturesque hill town of Nainital, ARIES ( an acronym of Aryabhatta Research Institute of observational sciencES ) is one of the leading research Institutes which specializes in observational Astronomy & Astrophysics and Atmospheric Sciences. The main research interests of Astronomy & Astrophysics division are in solar, planetary, stellar, galactic and extra-galactic astronomy including stellar variabilities, X-ray binaries, star clusters, nearby galaxies, quasars, and inherently transient events like supernovae and highly energetic gammaray bursts.Research focus in Atmospheric Sciences division is mainly in the lower part of the atmosphere and covers the studies on aerosols and trace gases. Moreover, to strengthen the scientific contribution the Institute has extended its horizon to theoretical and numerical studies in Relativistic Astrophysics. The unique position of ARIES (79° East), places it at almost in the middle of 180° wide longitude band, between Canary Island (20° West) and Eastern Australia (157° East), and therefore complements observations which might not be possible from either of these two places. ARIES has made unique contribution from time to time.

It is indeed of great pride that the Devasthal Optical telescope has been technically activated on 30th March 2016 jointly by Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and Honorable Prime Minister of Belgium, Mr. Charles Michel, remotely from Brussels, and in the gracious presence of the Honorable Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Government of India Dr. Harshvardhan at Devasthal.

The engineers/engineering staff at ARIES are actively involved not only in development of back-end instruments /softwares but also efficiently maintaining the available facilities.

The scientists of ARIES are also actively involved in the popularization of Science and in particular the topics related to the Astronomy and Atmospheric sciences among general public especially to the students from various schools in Nainital district and elsewhere in the country. Various workshops and events have been organized as a part of the public outreach program. Visitors are allowed to various facilities of the institute to show them the activities carried out by the scientists and engineers.
